Does solar work in Kerala's monsoon?
Yes. Output drops on heavy-cloud days, but panels keep producing, and the sunny months more than make up for it. Here is what to expect from June to November.
Less power on cloudy days, not none.
Solar panels use daylight, not heat, so they keep producing under cloud. On overcast monsoon days, a good panel still produces roughly 25% to 40% of its rated output. On days with breaks in the rain, output jumps back up.
Kerala's two monsoons, the south-west monsoon from June to September and the north-east monsoon in October and November, are the months with the lowest generation. December to May are the strongest months.
That is why we size systems on a full year's generation, not on a sunny day. Our solar calculator uses year-round Kerala figures.
How we protect your system through the monsoon.
Lightning protection
A lightning arrester and separate chemical earthing pits protect your home and inverter in thunderstorms.
Wind-rated mounting
Epoxy-coated steel structures rated for 150+ km/h gusts, with stainless steel fasteners that resist rust.
Sealed electricals
Weatherproof junction boxes and UV-resistant cables keep water out year after year.
The rain does most of the cleaning.
Panels are tilted at about 10 to 12 degrees, so rain washes off dust and leaves. After the monsoon, check for moss, bird droppings or fallen leaves that the rain did not clear, and rinse with plain water.
Have the earthing pits and lightning arrester checked about every six months, ideally once before the monsoon starts. Watch daily generation in the inverter app; a sudden drop on a sunny day means something needs a look.
